Day 19 - One Small Step - One Giant Leap!

Luke was able to get his the left chest tube out today. Good news, but it gets even better. His sedative level is reduced from 5 to 1 and his pain medication level is reduced from 20 to 15.

They switched his respirator mode from pressure to volume because Luke was breathing too fast and shallow. Once they changed the setting he was breathing much better.

Saving the best for last, when we went in to see Luke today, his nurse said that he was more coherent than he had been. I was standing beside his bed talking to him when he turned his head towards me, looked me straight in the eyes and gave me a huge smile! What a wonderful moment! Even typing this I can't hold back the tears of joy. Praise God for this huge step forward!

He was pretty much awake for the whole afternoon and, of course, with his awareness comes the discomfort of his injuries and the catheter. The other bad part is that he wants very much to talk to us but can't with the respirator. I sure wish I could read lips! We have to keep asking yes/no questions that he can respond to by nodding or shaking his head. We'll get a small dry erase board for him write down what he wants to say. Once he gets off the respirator, he'll be able to talk.

I can only feel a tiny bit of the joy you must be feeling, but it is enough to overwhelm me and bring tears to my eyes! Praise to our God Most High!! As I write this I just wonder if that is something like the joy our Heavenly Father must feel when we finally open our eyes, turn, look and smile at Him! I wonder if He stands over us, loving us, just waiting for us to come to the awareness of His presence.

The pancake breakfast was a wonderful thing. Thanks so much to Applebees for their selflessness.

Oh and thanks for the early update. We will continue to pray for Luke's recovery and both of you as you support your son. Love to all of you!

That is absolutely wonderful news and I'm sitting her bawling just thinking about him smiling up at you. What a great feeling that must have been.

These past couple of weeks Morgan has gotten on every morning first thing to check on Luke and then immediately comes to tell me. (even though I have already read it late at night)I can't help but sit back and smile thinking about the 4th of July we spent with you and your family and Luke blowing up the watermelon.

We will continue to pray for "giant leaps" and for his surgery tomorrow and Thursday.

Take care and love you guys!

Mike, Bonnie, Andrew and Morgan

What wonderful news. I check every night & have been waiting to hear those words. What a happy time for Mom & Dad. It even brought tears to my eyes & I thank God for answers to all the prayers. It was a long wait but worth it. God is sooo good & He must have felt that Luke needed that much time. Now prayers go out for the healing process. Thank you for keeping every one updated. Love & Prayers to all. Del & Lois

I got goose bumps thinking about what that moment must have been like. I imagine it may have been slightly comparable to when Luke was a baby and his eyes finally focused and he smiled at you for the first time! Praise to our awesome God!! You tell Luke that he has hundreds of prayer warriors laying him daily at the throne of the Great Physician. I am so excited that Luke has come round another bend in the road. Our prayers continue for his continued recovery and strengthening of both body and spirit.
