Day 32 - Breathing On His Own

Luke started sprinting at 5:00 this morning and sprinted for three hours. Then they removed the respirator tubes from his trach and put a trach collar over it. This gives him air over the trach but he is breathing totally on his own. He stayed on the trach collar all afternoon until visiting hours were over at 6:30 this evening. Occasionally his breathing rate would rise above the 40 breaths per minute limit that they like to see, but all his vitals remained normal and he didn't show any signs of discomfort or anxiety. What a giant leap forward after several days of small steps!

He was also taken off the ativan so he was more awake than he has been. Another huge step forward! He didn't have the trach collar deflated to talk to us but could write messages on his dry erase board for us.

Now that he is able to effectively communicate we talked to a trauma team doctor today about his left arm that he has not been moving. He will be evaluated by neurological doctors. Pray that they will be able to determine the problem and that it is not a long term problem.

I just started reading the blog tonight. A close friend of mine is spending time at the hospital visiting her husband. Her name is Bonnie and her husband is Mike, in the room next to Luke. Great to hear Luke is breathing on his own now. After reading the complete blog tonight, I can see Luke will be up and leaving the hospital in no time at all. If you should run into Bonnie, please give her a big hug for me. Thanks - Ed

How great is our God!? He can turn sorrows into joy and mourning into dancing! It looks like you are passed the "Corkscrew" part of the roller coaster. It is so great to hear Luke is breathing on his own. He'll soon be up and out and back to his life in no time. I wonder if the doctors and nurses know just was an amazing patient they have been caring for? Or if they know the awesome God that created this amazing person? Luke, there is no doubt that God has plans for you, plans to prosper and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future. I pray your eyes, ears and heart are open to receive, accept and follow that plan. Remember, you did not choose Him, but He choose you.

Bill and Paula, I thank God for your faithfulness. You both are pillars of strength, though not of your own. Thank you for giving God all the glory, for only He is worthy. And though I am glad you are able to be with Luke during this time, you both are missed back home. We had a couple of resemblances of you, Bill, last night at volleyball. Steve ran into the wall and Gary crashed into the doors, we thought he was going to end up in the parking lot! It was almost like having you among us again. :-) I hope your getting some kind of exercise out there, I'd hate to see you come back, all soft and out of shape and get mauled (in love) the next time you play with us.

Thanks again for keeping us all updated as to how the Lord is answering all these prayers! You can be sure that all the Saints are joining with your heart is praying for Luke's lungs and arm. I wonder how big is the bowl in heaven that is holding these prayers? Maybe as big as the Pacific Ocean! We love you all, give Luke a hug and kiss for us!

What a blessing! We are so thankful for our (and everyone's) prayers being answered to finally provide Luke with the strength to make this huge step toward progress.

We will all continue to pray for continued strength - physically, emotionally, and spiritiually.

Thank You Lord! This is great!
After reading the 31 days last night I prayed till I fell asleep, and then woke up this morning and my first thoughts were the prayers I fell asleep with.

Glory, glory to the Lord God Almighty for this wonderful praise report. Way to go Luke!! We are all so very proud of you and thankful to the Lord for the wonderful family, physicians and nurses he has placed your care under.

Keep up the great work and know we continue to lift you up daily in our prayers.

"I will praise you,
my God and King,
and always honor your name.
I will praise you each day
and always honor your name.

You are wonderful, LORD,
and you deserve all praise,
because you are much greater
than anyone can understand.

Each generation will announce
to the next your wonderful
and powerful deeds.
I will keep thinking about
your marvelous glory
and your mighty miracles.

You are merciful, LORD!
You are kind and patient
and always loving."
